Rants from Howard

The sickness of the 20th Century has been cowardice … the cowardice of millions allowing themselves to be liquidated by communists and Nazis without hitting back … The mystery of our time is the inability of decent people to get angry. Eric Hoffer It is the highest decree unwise to submit to any wrong without making an immediate and resolute effort to avenge it upon the wrong doers, at no matter what the cost of risk and trouble. To submit tamely and weakly to theft or any other injury is to invite almost certain repetition of the offense. Theodore Roosevelt The shocking thing is not that a crazy man raves in ever greater frenzy, but that Germany accepts it, for the tenth year now and in the fourth year of war, and that it continues to allow itself to be bled. And nowhere an end in sight. Victor Klemperer * * * I don't know who Eric Hoffer is, or if Theodore Roosevelt actually made the above quote. I took them from an old magazine because they really hit home. The third quote is from the diary of a German Jew who kept a journal of the Nazi years under penalty of death. I sent a copy of some research I'd done on DUI legislation and the abuse I new about in regard to alcohol arrests to Rep. Ron Clark (dist. 62). In his reply he agreed with some of my points and wrote that problems of abuse were discussed during the last session when the BAC limit was lowered to .08, however he'd not heard of any abuse. I was amazed. Was I the only person in his district who knew about bullshit alcohol arrests? In my mind legislators are like artillery units in the military. They fire a lot of shots, but seldom get a glimpse of the target. Legislation or laws may not be explosive rounds, but they can do a lot of damage. We're being bombarded by our own headquarters and nobody's bothering to contact them and say, "Would you mind adjusting your sights a little? You're wasting friendlys here!" If our reps don't get honest feedback from their constituents, where will they get it? Lobbiests? These people make a lot of money and are paid salaries that bump six figures or more to get results. They may not let trivial things like the facts or truth get in the way of their pursuit of luxury cars and floozies. If you get screwed over by a cop, bureaucrat, or bad law, let your elected officials know about it. You're not a puss or snitch. It's called being a concerned citizen. And, while I'm thinking about concerned citizens, don't forget the Democratic Convention in Ft. Worth 9, 10 June. Yeah, yeah, I know. It's the same weekend as the ROT rally in Austin. I can relate. I've spent time in the Hill Country and love it. But we need to make a showing. Come to Joe Poole lake and ride to the convention with us. Make history instead of a hangover. Bring a friend. Bring a friend's friend. Bring your girlfriend, your wife, your wife's girlfriend, your mother-in-law (am I a sick man or what?) Ride safe. Especially when you make history.
